GS1 Integration (Optional Plugin)
The implementation follows the GS1 Digital License specification, which provides a standardized framework for issuing and verifying GS1 licenses as verifiable credentials. For complete technical details, see the GS1 Digital License documentation.
What is the GS1 Plugin?
The GS1 plugin adds support for:
- GS1 Prefix License Credentials: Digital licenses for a GS1 prefix, issued by Global Office to a Member Organization
- Company Prefix Licenses: Licenses granted to companies by GS1 Member Organizations
- Product Data Credentials: Verified information about products with GTINs
- EPCIS Credentials: Supply chain event credentials
- GS1 Global Location Numbers (GLN): Unique location identifiers
Understanding GS1 Credentials
All GS1 credential types in this wallet implement the GS1 Digital License specification, which defines standardized data models and verification procedures for GS1 licenses as verifiable credentials.
GS1 Prefix Licenses
A GS1 Prefix License certifies:
- A GS1 Member Organization (MO) controls a specific GS1 prefix
- Issued by GS1 Global Office to Member Organizations
- Used to create GTINs, GLNs, and other GS1 identifiers
For the complete credential structure specification, see GS1 Prefix License.
Company Prefix Licenses
A Company Prefix License certifies:
- A company is authorized to use a specific GS1 company prefix
- Issued by GS1 Member Organizations to member companies
- Enables the company to create GTINs for their products
For the complete credential structure specification, see GS1 Company Prefix License.
Product Data Credentials
Certifies information about a specific product:
- Product name, description, brand
- GTIN (Global Trade Item Number)
- Manufacturer details
- Net content, weight, dimensions
For detailed information about product data credentials and supported fields, see the GS1 Digital License documentation.
Claiming GS1 Licenses
If you’re a GS1 Member Organization or member company, you can claim your license:
Note: Claiming is only necessary if you’re not on the same instance as the issuing party. If you are on the same instance, the license is automatically available. For organizations on different instances, licenses can be claimed from the public registry if they exist there.
Viewing Your GS1 Identity
- Go to GS1 Credentials in the main menu (if the plugin is enabled)
- View your organization’s GS1 details:
- Organization name
- GLN (Global Location Number)
- GS1 prefix or company prefix
- License status
Importing Your License
If your license exists in the registry:
- Click Claim license from registry
- The dialog matches your company type (a prefix license for a Member Organization, a company prefix license for a member company)
- Enter your license information:
- License value: Your GS1 prefix or company prefix
- Or Custom URL: Direct URL to your license credential
- Click Claim
- License is retrieved and imported
- You can now use it for issuing credentials
Issuing GS1 Credentials
Available GS1 Credential Types:
- GS1 Prefix License Credentials (issued by GS1 Global Office)
- Company Prefix License Credentials (issued by GS1 Member Organizations)
- Product Data Credentials (product information)
- EPCIS Credentials (supply chain events)
- GS1 Key Credentials (organizational identifiers)
Issuing GS1 Prefix License Credentials
These credentials follow the GS1 Prefix License data model.
For GS1 Global Office issuing to Member Organizations:
- Open GS1 Credentials and click Issue Prefix License
- Enter License Value, the prefix being licensed (for example
061414) - Enter Licensee DID, Organization Name, and Party GLN
- Choose the issuer and signing key
- Click Create License
- Upload your key file if this key uses one
Issuing Company Prefix License Credentials
These credentials follow the GS1 Company Prefix License data model.
For GS1 Member Organizations issuing to member companies:
- Open GS1 Credentials and click Issue Company Prefix License
- Select the Base License this company prefix extends
- Enter License Value. It must start with that base license and be longer (for example base

- Choose the issuer and signing key
- Click Create License
- Upload your key file if this key uses one
The license is published to the registry. The wallet does not put a revocation status on a company prefix license.
Issuing Product Data Credentials
For companies certifying their product information:

- Select the Base Key Credential
- Enter GTIN, Brand Name, Product Description, GPC Category Code, Net Content and Unit, and Target Market Countries
