Understanding Credential Status
How Status Management Works
When you issue a credential with revocation enabled, the wallet:
- Creates a status entry in a status list
- Assigns an index to track this specific credential
- Links the credential to the status list
- Monitors status changes (revoked/suspended/active)
Verifiers check the status list to confirm a credential hasn’t been revoked or suspended.
Status Types
Active
- Credential is valid and usable
- Normal state after issuance
- Passes verification checks
Revoked
- Credential is permanently invalid
- Cannot be undone
- Verification fails
- Used when credential should no longer be trusted
Suspended
- Credential is temporarily invalid
- Can be reinstated
- Verification fails while suspended
- Used for pending investigations or temporary issues
Status Lists
What are Status Lists?
Behind the scenes, the wallet uses a Bitstring Status List:
- A compressed list that tracks credential status
- Public and verifiable
- Updated when you revoke, suspend, or reinstate
You do not manage the list yourself. Status-list credentials are kept out of the ordinary credential list.
Verifiers read status from the public registry. See Public Registry and Verification.
